Unique Moments Photography did not have to travel at all for this lovely wedding reception and ceremony at the downtown Skansie Brothers park in Gig Harbor, Washington. Our studio and business is located at 7116 Stinson Ave, so it was a 6 block drive to The Club @ the Boatyard and Gig Harbor marina from our office.
Our clients reception started off with our bride catching a ride to the venue in her uncles custom hot rod truck. The groom was waiting for her at 3PM sharp on what turned out to be the hottest day of the month with not a cloud in sight at 3PM. It was super bright outside on the water, but we forged ahead with a quick first look and we were off to the back area of the harbor to get the bridal party photographed.
Skansie Brothers Park in on the water and clients face directly into the sun if they want the boats and the harbor in the background for their photos. Pictures are very difficult to capture under these lighting conditions so we drove 4 blocks to the Austin Estuary park to capture bridal party pictures. There is no open shade anywhere on the water front in Gig Harbor. On bright sunny days, capturing pictures on the water is difficult because the light is extremely reflective and bright. However the estuary is a good option because clients are not looking directly into the sun and they will be lit from the side by the sun in bright midday lighting conditions.
Our couple decided to have a small ceremony prior to the reception for family and friends who all flew in from Michigan, Oklahoma and the East coast. The groom’s Grandfather was the pastor that performed the ceremony which was held right on the water in Skansie Brothers Park. The ceremony was beautiful and after the family pictures were captured, everyone was off to the reception area at the Club @ The Boatyard. Family and friends were treated to an awesome BBQ dinner. Reception highlights were speeches by the best man and maid of honor followed with the bride and groom having a first dance for family and friends. The brides father also has a first dance with his daughter.
Following the reception highlights, we headed out to the water area to capture some final portraits with the bride and groom. This was a very small family reception and ceremony. We covered this event in a 5 hour time frame and we delivered 575 images for our clients. The lighting can be difficult at 3PM on the water anywhere especially here in Gig harbor. It’s best to try to get to a park and find some open shade whenever possible but you lose the harbor as the background. We truly enjoyed ourselves and the families of the bride and groom. This was a military family, so it was a double pleasure capturing this wedding and reception for these military families.
The Club@ The boatyard at the Gig Harbor Marina is an awesome location to have a wedding reception. Guest will be right on the water and will enjoy the downtown feel that the venue and Skansie Brothers park provides for their family members. It’s always great to capture a wedding in your hometown and we loved being a part of this one. This was a great reception and family wedding in our Gig Harbor community.
